Guillen Update & MLB signs stadium lease
He has acquired a second medical opinion. New opinion indicates that Guillen might be ready to play opening day.
MLB signs stadium lease, team will not in fact be shipped to Guam to become the Guam
Gummy Bears, according to article on the team site.
"Clearing what could be the final hurdle to building a new ballpark in
Washington, D.C., Major League Baseball ostensibly accepted the City
Council's terms on Sunday and signed a 30-year lease agreement for the
Nationals to play in a new stadium on the waterfront just a mile south
of the Capitol building."
Of course that "could be the final hurdle" certainly is an annoying thing to read.
Nationals beat O's in yesterday's game. By the bottom of the fourth, each side
answered the others scoring run, but by the top of the fifth, the Nationals had
added 2 runs to their total to bring the game to 4-2 in their favor. They added another three runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the O's attempted to get back in the game by knocking in 2 runs in the top of the seventh (7-4). The Nats answer with
three in the bottom of the 8th and the O's bring the score to 10-6 with two more
runs in the top of the ninth, not enough to force a bottom of the ninth inning.
Somebody named Matt LeCroy hit a home run, along with Marlon Anderson and Ryan
Zimmerman to give the Nats some needed runs, while Clayton, Byrd and Tucker
knocked in some runs off of singles, and Godwin picks up 2 RBI off of a triple.
Nats starter: Jon Rauch (3 innings).
Clean-up pitcher: Steve Watkins (3 shut-out innings).
"Guillen indicated he anticipates playing on Opening Day,
"If I play the last 10 days of spring, that's enough for
me," Guillen said. "I am in great shape. I am doing all
the activities -- throwing and all that stuff. If you
can hit, you can hit."

Jose Guillen injuried, out three months
Guillen was being eased back into playing form this spring, he was recovering from an injury to his shoulder (for which he had surgery in November). Then he injuries his wrist and "will be out at least three months because of a left wrist injury" (according to an Nationals e-mail I received). Apparently the wrist was injured a while back, but it wasn't until this morning that x-ray's revealed a damaged tendon.
One pitcher, one batter down and out (of course, the Nationals.com injuries page looks like this: "No injuries yet this season.").
I've been silent all this time waiting for the stupid little stadium deal to get done, so I can stop holding my breath. Supposedly the MLB will decide on or by Monday.
Nationals.com article. Oh, and the Nationals lost in their first Grapefruit league game (a large number of players were on the bench, waiting to leave to start that World Baseball Championship thing).
