Nationals Lose Close One 3-2 Against Arizona

18-16 Nationals faced 20-15 Diamondbacks. ESPN recap, box score.

Vargas faced former Montreal pitcher Vazquez. Vargas pitched 6 solid innings, giving up just 6 hits and 1 unearned run, while striking out 3 off of 92 pitches.

The Nationals scored first when Scheider doubled in the second inning, and Baerga (playing 2B) ran home. The game went scoreless for the next two innings, and then the Diamondbacks knocked in a run in the 5th when Baerga made an error. The Nationals went back into the lead in the top of the 7th inning, but the Diamondbacks immediately answered in the bottom of the inning, and then took the lead by scoring once in the bottom of the 8th.

TRADE: OHKA Traded

Ohka traded to Brewers for 2B Junior Spivey (currently hitting .236 with 5 HRs, 17 RBI, and 7 SB). I wondered why the Nationals.com preview of tonights game mentioned Ohka as starting the game in the body of the preview, but had Hernandez starting at the bottom. Story.

Sunny Kim (1-0, 0.00) makes the start tonight, instead of Ohka. story

Also, the team added two players off waivers. RHP Ryan Drese (4-6, 6.46 ERA 12 GS; Drese was the opening day starter for the Rangers) was claimed off of the Texas waivers, and RHP Jacobo Sequea (will join AA team; 23, posted 52 saves in last 2+ seasons) claimed off of Balitmore's waivers. Hammonds announces retirement.

Current roster (don't recall Rick Short being added, but he is on the roster and plays 3B).

Nationals Remain in First, Sweep Oakland, Pick up Players in Draft

Draft:
The first player to be drafted by Nationals (as the Nationals), with the fourth pick of the draft, turned out to be a relatively local player. Third baseman (and high school short-stop) Ryan Zimmerman, of the University of Virginia and of Virginia Beach, quickly signed a contract with the team as he wanted to play immediately (he will join the AA team). The GM notes that he "wouldn't be afraid to call Zimmerman up to the big leagues this year." Story, and Story.
48 players in all were drafted by the Nationals, with the team only planning on signing 8 of them.

Sweep Series:
Hernandez won his ninth game of the year, and the Nationals have now won seven of their last 10 games. Game recap.

First Place:
With their sweep of the Oakland team the Nationals remain in first, 1.5 games up over 2nd place Philies (and 3.5 over last place Marlins). The team is at a season high 8 games over .500.

News:
Byrd suspended for two games. Vidro news.

Church NL Rookie for May.
Church hit .377 for the month. Story.

Tonight's Game:
Three game series against Seattle begins tonight at 7:05 pm tonight. Last time the two teams meet, Seattle swept the series last year. Hopefully this season, with the Nationals in first 8 games over .500, and the Mariners 8 games below .500, the Nationals will not allow themselves to be swept.

Ohka (4-3, 3.33 era) will face Pineriro (2-3, 6.33 era). Story. Stat Pack.
